Badminton Smash: Vision-based Upper Extremity Kinematic Analysis

Badminton, the fastest racquet sport, is a popular worldwide sport. It demands comprehensive sports abilities including stamina, agility, muscle strength, and reaction speed. Smash is a powerful and speedy scoring stroke.  The current world record is 493 km/hr. To achieve such powerful smash, the player needs to have precise muscle controls and very good motor coordination.  It is a very important basic stroke to be mastered by every badminton player. To the best of our knowledge, scientific understanding of badminton is limited. There is a need to fully understand the intricate motion for many purposes, e.g. coaching.  In this seminar, I will present the 3D motion capturing system and the kinematic analyses of the raw data. A full body marker setup was used to allow capturing of the 3D motion of the entire body. An eight-camera VICON Motion Capture System was used to capture the 3D motion.  The raw data were analyzed by in-house developed Matlab programs.  Speeds, accelerations, angular velocities, and impact location were constructed and analyzed.  The intricate motion was examined in terms of the rotations of the wrist, forearm, and upper arm. Motion data of different players were collected and compared. At the end of the seminar, conclusions, limitations, and future works will be presented.
