I’ll introduce and discuss research activities of the Additive Manufacturing Laboratory in Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. 3D printing can generate custom designs of complex 3D form-factors that enable sensors to be integrated on curvilinear objects. The design, fabrication, and characterization of 3D structural sensor systems for sensing applications will be discussed. Various 3D-printed sensor platforms including transistor, digital microfluidic, and wireless RF based sensors will be demonstrated for the unique form-factored wearables and sensing robot applications. I hope that this seminar talk introduce newly developed “Biomedical Sensing Robot” concepts to the University of Hong Kong.

Short biography:

Dr. Woo Soo Kim is an Associate Director and an Associate Professor of the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering in Simon Fraser University (SFU). Prior to SFU career, he was a Senior Research Scientist in Xerox Corporation for two years after the period of a Post-doctoral Research in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for two and half years. He received BSc degree from Yonsei University in 2001, and MSc and PhD degrees from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He was the winner of Quadrant Award 2007, international PhD thesis competition. And he received Hanwha Corporation’s New Faculty Award in 2016. He has published 67 peer-reviewed journal papers in the most prestigious journals in his core disciplines and in high impact cross-disciplinary journals such as Advanced Materials, npj Flexible Electronics, and Joule. Recently, his research is dedicated to the advanced 3D printing technologies for architectured solids and 3D printed sensing applications. Lab webpage:
