History of the International Symposium on Surface and Interface of Biomaterials

The series of International Symposium on Surface and Interface of Biomaterials was initiated in 2005 when some leading scientists in the biomaterials and tissue engineering field from Japan, Korea, China, Australia and other Asian countries gathered in Korea for an international conference. It was felt that surfaces and interfaces in biomaterials and tissue engineering are highly important issues and that a new series of international conferences on these issues could and should be organized. Professor Nan Huang of Southwest Jiao Tong University, Chengdu, China, was chosen to organize the 1st symposium (SIB2007) in the series. SIB2007 was financially supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Nearly 200 delegates from 13 countries attended SIB2007 and presented 250 papers. After the symposium, a Special Issue of the journal Applied Surface Sciences (Publisher: Elsevier) was organised for SIB2007 and it accepted and published 101 papers which had undergone the journal’s peer-review process.

At SIB2007, Hong Kong was chosen as the venue for the 2nd International Symposium on Surface and Interface of Biomaterials (ISSIB-II). Professor Min Wang of the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, took up the task of organizing ISSIB-II which will take place in Hong Kong on January 4-6, 2010. The Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong provide strong support for organizing ISSIB-II
