Research Degrees -- Doctor
of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
-
The University offers the following
research postgraduate programmes in both full-time and part-time modes:
-
Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
-
3-year Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD)
-
4-year Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD)
-
MPhil and PhD are research programmes
focusing on research work and the award of the degree depends mainly on
the assessment of the thesis.
-
A successful MPhil thesis should
represent the result of the candidate’s research which displays some originality
and which demonstrates a sound understanding of the field of study and
the appropriate research methods, and a successful PhD thesis should represent
the result of the candidate’s research which should be an original contribution
to knowledge and worthy of publication.
-
Local and overseas students
who would like to enquire about admission as our research students should
firstly read our Graduate School website at www.hku.hk/gradsch
for general information on admission to our PhD and MPhil research degrees
programme and financial support.
-
Please study the research interests
of our staff to see whether one of us is a suitable supervisor for your
proposed project. You should then proceed to write a preliminary research
proposal of about 2000 words to include the following sections: broad field
of research, research objectives, research scope, suggested study area
(if applicable), suggested main research methods, suggested contribution
to knowledge, possible applications of research findings, and at least
ten pertinent references.
-
The research proposal should
be sent to the potential supervisor for comments before it is attached
to your application forms.
