    Course Description
    Level: 3
    Duration: First semester
    Credit Units: 6 credits
    Prerequisite: None
Calendar Entry: Introduction to the construction industry; electrical supply and lighting system design; lifts and escalators; air conditioning and refrigeration; cold and hot water supply systems; stormwater and sanitary drainage systems; fire safety and protection.
    Objectives:
  • To enable students to understand the basic concepts of building services.
  • To demonstrate how fundamental principles of mechanical and electrical engineering can be applied to the design of building services systems.
  • To allow students to appreciate the constraints and requirements of practical building services design.
  • Assessment Methods: Examination (80%); practical work (10%); in-course assessment (10%)

    Course Content:

The course emphases the application of basic principles of mechanical and electrical engineering to the design and analysis of building services systems.  The students have the opportunity to study different types of building services systems and perform laboratory experiments to better understand the application of knowledge acquired.

The course requires the students to integrate a number of different topics in mechanical and electrical engineering.  It draws heavily on the Level 2 courses Applied Thermodynamics and Mechanics of Fluids, and has a close relationship with the Level 3 courses Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion Systems.

    Lectures and Assigned Readings

The detailed list of lecture/topics is contained in the Course Schedule. The lectures provide the conceptual framework for the course and will also be supplemented with assigned readings if necessary. Students are recommended to complete all the assigned readings on their own time so that questions which may arise can be discussed more fully. Students are expected to have a working understanding of the lecture and reading materials.

    Examination

A written examination will be conducted at the end of the course. Additional information about the examination paper will be provided over the course.
